How to get cited by Perplexity: an evidence-led workflow

Mike Holp · Published · Updated · Reviewed · 4 min read

To get cited by Perplexity, start with the questions for which your page would be a useful source. Inspect the answers and their original citations, check that your public page is accessible, and improve the specific information missing from that page. No submission, markup or content formula guarantees a citation.

Short answer: Freeze a small set of unbranded buyer questions, save Perplexity’s answers and source URLs, identify one verified evidence gap, improve the relevant page, and repeat the same panel. A source citation and a business recommendation are separate outcomes.

What Perplexity says it does

Perplexity describes its product as an answer engine that searches for information and supplies source citations. Read its official explanation. That description explains the source-review workflow; it does not disclose a recipe for ranking your site.

Record whether you tested the consumer interface or an API model, whether search was enabled, and the date. These are different surfaces. A result from a model API does not establish what every consumer session will display.

Start with the buyer’s task

A useful panel might include a service question, a local selection question and a constraint question. For a fictional dental practice, examples would be “What should I ask before an implant consultation?” and “Which dentists in this city offer evening appointments?” Confirm the actual city and service before testing a real business.

Keep “What does [business name] do?” in a separate recognition panel. It supplies the name you are trying to measure. Use the prompt library to define intent, then preserve wording across rounds.

Follow the original citation

For every returned source, record the full URL, the sentence it supports and whether it belongs to your business, a competitor or an independent publisher. Check the page itself. A source may be cited as background even when its publisher is not recommended.

Do not replace an absent citation with a search result found later. Label a domain mentioned in prose separately from an original linked citation. The citation tracking guide explains why that distinction matters.

Worked editorial example

Illustrative scenario: an answer cites a comparison page that explains appointment availability, but your service page only says “contact us.” Verify your real booking policy. If evening appointments exist, publish the actual days, eligibility and booking route on the service page. If they do not, leave that claim out.

Save the page URL and change date. On the next round, inspect whether Perplexity cites the updated page or a different source. Even if the citation appears, this before-and-after observation alone cannot establish causation: retrieval and model behavior can change at the same time.

Check access without promising inclusion

Use the AI crawler checker for its declared robots-policy checks, then inspect hosting logs and CDN rules if real requests fail. A permissive robots file is not proof that a provider fetched or selected your page. Useful content also needs clear internal links and consistent entity information.

An llms.txt generator can create an optional site map for agents that use that convention. Treat it as an experimental aid, not a requirement for Perplexity citations.

Re-measure and choose the next action

Use the observation worksheet to retain original evidence. Count unique, valid answers; disclose failed requests and uncertain matches. Separate mention, recommendation and first-party citation rates. Repeat samples can expose variation, but a small panel is not a population estimate.

A free VisiScan scan provides an initial API-based diagnostic across available engines. Read its methodology and inspect actual coverage. For recurring review, compare the Monitor scope.

FAQ

Can I pay Perplexity to cite my website organically?

This workflow concerns observed organic source citations. It offers no paid placement or inclusion guarantee. Evaluate any advertising offer separately from organic measurement.

Is a mention enough to count as a citation?

No. Record a business mention, a recommendation and an original source link separately. A business can be recommended without its website being cited.

How long will a content change take to appear?

There is no guaranteed interval. Record the publication date, check access, and repeat the same panel later. A missing citation does not identify a specific cause by itself.
